110 Machine Translation Systems

Edinburgh University presents a demonstration of the quality of 110 translation systems trained on the Europarl corpus

The promise of statistical machien translation is to quickly build translation systems with minimal human input. In a pilot study in Spring 2005, we did just that and trained machine translation systems for 110 language pairs.

A demonstration of the translation performance is available at http://www.statmt.org/matrix/

Within the EuroMatrix, we first focus more attention on some of these language pairs. Within the ACL Workshop on Statistical Machine Translation, we organize a shared task to build translation systems for 8 language pairs (French, Spanish, German, Czech to English and back). Internally, we are working on more language pairs.

The matrix of language pairs between official languages of the European Union represents the grant challenge of the EuroMatrix project. In 2007, we will open up the matrix to an online competition, where participants can submit their system's translation performance at any time and compare it against the quality obtained by other translation systems.
